6 week challenge members are asked to get some form of exercise daily outside of their scheduled studio sessions. This isn’t just recommended for those in the challenge, it is a great day and very beneficial for everyone.

The number one thing we recommend outside of your sessions is walking! Quite frankly, it is a great habit to create lifestyle changes that will encourage better health, sustainable weight loss, and a happier outlook on life.

You carry your own body weight when you walk. This is known as weight-bearing exercise. Weight-bearing exercise has many benefits!

Some of the benefits of walking include:

  • increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness
  • reduced risk of heart disease and stroke
  • improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes
  • stronger bones and improved balance
  • increased muscle strength and endurance
  • reduced body fat
  • and more

According to Better Health, “Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. It can also reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and some cancers.”

This is the perfect time of year to get outside, not too hot and not too cold!

Take 30 minutes on your lunch break, before or after work and unplug, detach, and unwind from your long day. Focus on yourself and your health and get walking. Grab the kids, the dog or just yourself.  A 30-minute walk may not seem like much, but when done daily the benefits stack up.

Remember, the sessions in the studio are taxing on your body, and your daily exercise does not have to be so challenging 5-7 days a week. Recovery is so important and overuse can lead to injuries.

Going for a walk is a great active recovery exercise! Doing things like taking the stairs and parking further out in the parking lot is beneficial for getting steps in throughout the day, but taking time for yourself, scheduling your walks, and treating them like your sessions at the studio is very important for your mental health as well.

Schedule your walk, and execute the walk as if it is a scheduled appointment because it is. These activities daily create the discipline and habits that become a lifestyle.
